Dental Implant Dentist Pasadena Texas:
The Failure of Bridges
In the past bridges were cutting edge. The days of bridges being acceptable treatment are long gone. Bridges merely “bridged” over the missing tooth space. Dental implants are the gold standard in replacing missing teeth.
Problems with Bridges
- Bridges damage neighbor teeth. Teeth on either side of the missing teeth have to be cut down to little pegs in order to hold the bridge. The teeth are cut down so aggressively that they often need root canals.
- Bridges do nothing to preserve the bone and gum tissue. This causes recession of the gum tissue causing an ugly black void under the bridge.
- The survival rate for bridges is only 50% at ten years.
- Bridges frequently need to be redone because of decay. Bridges are hard to clean because everything is fused together.
This patient had a bridge placed on his front tooth by another dentist. He came to see me when the bridge was moving. The BLUE line represents the bone shrinking away because there is no tooth to stimulate the bone. The RED shows were the decay has completely rotted out the tooth. The patient would have been so much better to replace his lost tooth with a dental implant.
Dental implants do not damage adjacent teeth like bridges.
