Why Dental Implants?
Dental implants have improved the quality of life for people throughout the world, enhancing overall dental health and well-being. Dental implants restore the confidence that comes from a natural smile and appearance. This advanced dental technology allows Dr. Nugent to restore the mouth as closely as possible to its original state and abolish the need to grind down neighboring teeth for bridgework.
Dental implants are simply substitute tooth roots. Dental implants are placed in areas of the mouth where teeth are missing. Then Dr. Nugent can build single implant teeth, implant bridges, and implant dentures.
A huge reason to replace the tooth root (and not just the visible part of the tooth) is that natural tooth roots preserve the jaw bone. During chewing the forces are transmitted down the tooth into the jaw bone. The jaw bone is stimulated and stays healthy and strong. When teeth are lost, the jaw bone that earlier supported those teeth dissolves away and deteriorates. This process is known as bone resorption.
However, the bone can be preserved by replacing missing teeth with dental implants. The bone fuses with the dental implant locking it into place. Then when you chew forces are transmitted down the implant into the jaw bone. This stimulates the bone and keeps the bone healthy.
Dental Implants are better than Bridges:
Another awesome feature of dental implants is that they do not damage adjacent teeth. A bridge replaces a missing tooth but it does not replace the root of the missing tooth. In order to place a bridge a dentist has to grind the adjacent teeth down. This irreversibly damages the natural teeth. These teeth are now more likely to need a root canal. A bridge literally “bridges” over the missing tooth with a fake tooth on top of the gum tissue. A bridge is bulky and difficult to clean. Therefore, bridges often get decay on the support teeth necessitating the removal of the bridge and a new or larger bridge made. With a dental implant, no adjacent teeth are damage. A dental implant is independent of the other teeth. A dental implant will never need a root canal and will never get decay.
