Dr. Nugent what is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry uses oral and inhalation drugs to relax and calm. This allows the patient to feel relaxed and comfortable during dental treatment. Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) is inhaled and produces relaxation. Nitrous oxide is a great first line drug for calming the fearful dental patient. The drug is simply breathed in through the nose. The inhalation is a combination of Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen. Another marvelous feature of Nitrous Oxides is to reverse the effects patients are simply given pure Oxygen to breathe. The Oxygen “flushes” the drug (Nitrous Oxide) out of your lungs. Once clear of Nitrous Oxide, the patient is no longer under the influence of the Laughing Gas. For patients that are extremely fearful oral sedation medications can be given. Usually these drugs are Valium, Halcion or Ativan. The Patient will come to Dr. Nugent’s office where they will take their oral sedation medication. The medication takes about 45 minutes to start working. Patients taking oral sedation will have to have someone drive them home. For maximum dental sedation benefit, Dr. Nugent can use multiple Oral Sedation medications AND Nitrous Oxide. Dental Sedation medications are NOT an anesthetic. Therefore, local anesthetic will still be used so no pain is felt during the procedure. The great news is that the local anesthetic only be used after the patient is completely relaxed and sedate. Most sedation patients don’t even remember the injection or the patients are so relaxed they don’t care about the injection.
